In dialogue with others I have repeatedly found that conversations about watches rarely remained conversations just about watches.
Instead, they became conversations about fathers and daughters. About marriages and milestones. About loss and gratitude. About military service, illness, vocation, friendship, faith, perseverance, and second chances.
The watch was never really the story. It was simply the doorway.
Every meaningful watch seemed to carry with it a life that had unfolded while wearing it.
That realization became The Stories We Wear.
The Project
The Stories We Wear is an ongoing archive dedicated to preserving the personal stories behind the watches people choose to keep.
Some watches are inherited.
Some are earned.
Some are gifts.
Some commemorate life's greatest joys.
Others quietly accompany its deepest sorrows.
Some cost fifty dollars.
Others cost fifty thousand.
Here, none of that matters nearly as much as the life each watch has witnessed.
This project exists because objects often become vessels of memory, and few objects accompany us as faithfully through life as the watch we wear on our wrist.
Every watch measures time. The best ones also preserve memory.
